Swedish Energy Agency

Background and status

The Swedish Energy Agency is the national authority for energy policy issues. It has been operating since 1998. The Agency’s headquarters are in Eskilstuna and it has around 250 employees.

Mission and objectives

The Agency's mission is to promote the development of the Swedish energy system, so that it will become ecologically and economically sustainable. This means that energy must be available at competitive prices and that energy generation must make the least possible impact on people and the environment.

Strategic objectives

  1. The Agency works to ensure that energy matters are automatically taken into account in relevant social sectors.
  2. The Agency supports the achievement of the national climate targets.
  3. The Agency promotes an energy system that is economical on resources and energy efficient, and that uses an increasing proportion of renewable energy sources.
  4. The Agency works to ensure that there is a safe and reliable energy supply.
  5. The Agency works for efficient energy markets in which customers have a strong position.
  6. The Agency is a modern and efficient public authority in all respects.
  7. The Agency is an attractive employer whose employees are given good development opportunities in a sound working environment.

A broad field of tasks

The Agency is engaged in many different tasks in the energy sector:

RD&D: Funding of research in energy tecnology and energy systems, promotion of Swedish clean tech on international markets, business development
Emissions trading system, CDM/JI projects, Electricity certificate system
System Analysis, statistics, analysis, forecasts and scenarios
Municipal advisory services and regional cooperation 
International collaboration: EU, Irena, IEA, bilateral agreements etc.  
Improving energy efficiency, programme for energy efficiency in industry, tests and labelling of products
Energy crisis management, etc.
