Energy Saving Trust

The Energy Saving Trust is an independent, not-for-profit organisation funded by the government and private sector. Set up to promote energy saving after the 1992 Rio Earth Summit we have two goals:

• To achieve the sustainable use of energy
• To cut carbon dioxide emissions, one of the key contributors to climate change

The Energy Saving Trust acts as a bridge between consumers, government, trade, businesses, local authorities and the energy market.

Membership & governance

Our members include major energy suppliers, the Secretaries of State for Defra, DfT and Northern Ireland, the National Assembly of Wales and the First Minister for Scotland. We are based in London and have offices in Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast and Brussels.

Our activities are overseen by a Board of Directors on which member organisations are represented and with a majority of independent Directors. This enables us to secure input and support from key organisations, whilst retaining independence of action. It is fundamental to our success that our customers trust in our independence and our governance arrangements guarantee this.

A practical approach for real envoronmental improvements

As a public private partnership, our approach is practical – our objectives are aimed at achieving real environmental improvement. We are the trusted, expert and independent organisation leading on sustainable energy and carbon emissions reduction in consumer markets in the UK and achieve this by:

• engaging with consumers to raise awareness, provide advice, signpost them and support them to take action;
• working with local communities to build collective responses to climate change;
• working with the private sector to co-ordinate the approach to tackling climate change in consumer markets; and
• providing independent and authoritative research to Government, the media and other stakeholders as a contribution to public debate and evidence based policy making.
