Background and Status

Agence de l’Energie S.A. (AEL) is Luxembourg’s Energy Agency. It was founded in June 1991 by the National Ministry of Energy in collaboration with the national electricity utility CEGEDEL and the national electricity importer SEO.

AEL is in charge of co-ordinating studies and realisations in the fields of rational use of energy, valorisation of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in the transport sector. AEL also ensures that information and demonstration activities, as well as promotion of new energy technologies concerning the projects, are carried out.

Expertise

AEL's mission is to promote new energy technologies. AEL has experience in planning, co-ordinating and carrying out project in the fields mentioned above. AEL has a full time team of four people, a technical committee of three engineers and five administrators.

AEL is currently running about 15 projects including:

• three hybrid-electric buses for the city of Luxembourg - THERMIE project
• SAGITTAIRE - THERMIE project - demonstration and promotion of hybrid-electric buses on a large scale
• energy savings in public buildings
• small-scale hydro
• wind energy
• energetic aspects in transport
• wood combustion system.

• AEL has collaborated in defining the national PEEC programme - energy savings in municipalities
• AEL gives advice to ministry of Environment, Energy, Economic affairs and municipalities in the framework of wind projects
• AEL participates regularly in ‘intra muros meetings’ of Ministry of Energy
• AEL is asked for advice in national financial support programmes
• AEL has carried out strategic studies in order to define RES and RUE programmes.
